DIY Thieves Household Wipes

Since the start of Covid people are much more conscious of cleaning and sanitizing surfaces.  At our house we have been using Thieves household cleaner for virtually everything.  No toxic fumes, smells great and has been proven successful in killing many little nasties in your home.  An even larger bonus is it is safe for children and/or pets.  Let me tell you from experience, teach your children EARLY how to clean and get them involved in the cleaning process.

The Clorox wipes and other similar products have safety warnings all over them.  I don't want to use products like that.  Over the years we have slowly moved to more plant based and natural products in our home.   With the lack of disinfecting wipes available during this pandemic it made so much sense to make our own!   You only need 4 things.

1.  Large roll of paper towels.  We like Bounty.   Of course you can purchase these at the grocery store but if you prefer to shop from home?   Bulk Paper Towels

2.  A bottle of Thieves household cleaner.

See the source image

3.  A small container.  We like this one:    Favorite Container

4.  Water

Directions:

  • Cut your roll of paper in half.
  • Place it in the container.
  • Mix In Bowl 2 Cups Water & 2 Capfuls Thieves Cleaner
  • Pour the Water Mixture Over The Paper Towels
Voila' you are done.   Let the towels soak up the moisture.  Once the towels are wet you will be able to remove the cardboard tube from the center.  Our recommended container seals tightly to help keep moist.   Open the lid and pull wipes from the center!   Super easy.

On the go?   Pick up some of these refillable baby wipe containers and add a few of your paper towels to this for a portable option.  Wipe your hands, wipe down shopping carts and much more!

Thieves household cleaner can be used for many cleaning tasks in your home.  This product is highly concentrated and will make you MANY bottles of cleaning solution at a fraction of the cost.   Notice we only used 2 capfuls in the recipe above.  Here are recommended dilution ratios.

Be Observant - Be Present

My parents survived the depression.   My Father was incredibly frugal.   He did very well in his business but he would still haggle over acorn squash prices at a roadside stand.   He would pick up people's trash (long before Bloomington curbside pickup), fix it and either sell it or use it in our home.   He had the funds to buy whatever he wanted, but he was always frugal.

We took a lot of vacations in the car.   We didn't stay at fancy hotels, we stayed at motels (do they even exist anymore?).   I was ecstatic if we stayed at a motel that had a pool.   My oldest brother is 18 years older than I am.  I am the youngest of 4 which means I was basically an only child.   Yes, we took some big trips to Europe (to see my other brother who was stationed in the army in Germany) and to Hawaii years later when I was in high school.     But MANY of our trips were road trips.   Drive to a place, stay in a motel, drive to another place, stay in a motel until you got to your destination.

I had the backseat to myself generally and I was really good at sleeping in the car.   I still have that skill if anyone wonders.   The beauty to me was that I would fall asleep and then wake up and we would almost be there.   I thought car rides were horribly boring.  My Mother would regularly say, "Lori if you sleep the whole car ride you will miss so much!"  I wasn't buying it at the time.

My parents bought a lake home when I was 2.   I grew up at that lake home.   We were at the end of a dirt road.   We didn't have a tv.   We listened to music, we played cards, we did puzzles, we rock hunted, we explored, we fished, we swam, we played yard games, we bird watched, we boated, we grilled, we gardened, we did yard work and every day we would "go for a walk down the road".   I remember those walks usually just with my Mother very fondly.   We would talk, look for agates, watch the birds, she would point out wildflowers.   We had reference books and when we saw particular birds or flowers we would look them up and mark in the books the date and location.  We were present in the moment and always observant of what was around us and the gift of nature that God provided.

See the source image         See the source image

I learned to be observant.    I learned to listen.   I learned to watch.   Boy, how much did I miss while sleeping on those car trips?  The joy she had in finding and seeing God's creation every day was infectious.   A sense of adventure and discovery was something I cherish now.

Fast forward to today.

I now understand my parent's frugality.   It came from experience.   It came from fear.   We have learned to be much better stewards of our money during these trying times.

The world has slowed down.   Time is all relative now.   Our society needed this change of pace.

Cell phones, and being constantly connected is not good.   Everyday we see people walking by our house, looking at their phones or even talking on their phones with headphones.   Why is everyone afraid of silence?   True silence doesn't exist.   While you are walking you may hear the sound of a trickling creek, or the birds singing.  Even the sound of a chainsaw or a mower brings back memories of my childhood summers.   Open your eyes.   Look at the world and the people around you.   Listen to the beautiful music God provides outside.

Our family has become more connected through this shutdown.   We are going for walks together.  We are playing games.  If I can share a little of the joy my Mother shared with me I will pass along a legacy of beauty and joy.

Why Do You Eat? Understand Your Triggers.

I am sure you have all been on pins and needles wondering where I have been and how I have been doing!   I have taken a little time away from the juicing and tried my hand at eating whole foods again.

See, now, here is my issue.   I love to eat.   I have been trying to be mindful here now about what, when and why I eat?   I have discovered a number of things.

1.  I eat when I am bored.

Yes.   I admit it.   When I get home, or when I am bored I go and open up the fridge to see what is in there.   Usually, I don't pick something healthy.  Some pretzels, a cheese and crackers, lunch meat and of course the dreaded........

POTATO CHIPS

Understanding your eating habits is a big part of the battle.  What are your triggers?   Do you know what they are?

2.  I have a hard time stopping when I am satisfied.

Oh, this is such a learned behavior.   Again, I am not one to blame others, but I am of the 'clean your plate' generation.   You weren't allowed to leave the table until you cleaned your plate.

I won't tell you about the peas that I snuck to the dog so I wouldn't have to eat them.    I have to work really hard to be sure that I don't finish what is served, especially at a restaurant.   Serving sizes have become absolutely ridiculous at restaurants.

A couple of tips at restaurants.
 - Avoid the bread basket!
 - Avoid heavy, creamy dressings and go for vinaigrettes or oil and vinegar
 - Ask the server to split your entree and put half in a box before it is served
 - Split your entree with a friend
 - Start with a green salad (but remember to avoid the creamy dressings)
 - Drink a large glass of water before you eat
 - Avoid alcohol if you are really trying to lose weight

3.  Enjoy your food/Eat slowly/CHEW

We live in such a rushed world and we are always (at our house) throwing down dinner or eating late, or eating breakfast in the car.   Food is something that should be enjoyed.   Chewing has been shown to help increase satiety.  Even if you are eating a green salad, sit down at the table and enjoy your food!   Chewing your food well also helps with digestion!

Here is a great article to read on that.   https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26188140

So, where am I at?   As I mentioned, I took a couple weeks where I focused on exercise and eating healthy.   As of this morning I am down a total of 22 pounds.   I am almost half way to my goal!

What have I noticed?

  • Increased Energy
  • Sleeping Better
  • Clothes Fit Better
  • My skin is clearer and looks more lusturous
  • I stand just a little bit taller now (I know I was tall to start)

BHAG's - Update - Day #11

Weight Loss is a funny thing.  When you have more than 10 or 20 pounds to lose it can seem overwhelming.   What happens for me?  I lose the first chunk of weight.  I feel great.  I can see it in my face   My clothes fit differently.  Then reality hits.   I HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO!

It is easy to get frustrated.   It is easy to give up.   It is easy to say things like, "I'll never get there".

Yes I will.   I know I can do this.   What makes me even more excited is I am doing this on my own.   No fancy pills or shakes (all the shakes do is drop your calorie intake, so why wouldn't you just do that with whole foods?)

I have not wanted to share my goal because I guess I was embarrassed by how big that goal had become.  It meant I had let my emotions and other external factors affect my well being and affect my weight.

So, here it is...  My weight loss goal from my start date is 50lbs.   Ok.  I know there are people that have hundreds of pounds to lose.   I have HUGE respect for them.   But #THISISMYJOURNEY.

I have not given you the results of my 10 day juice cleanse.   I made it all 10 days and I didn't stray once!   That is a big goal for me.   Was it easy?   No.  Would I do it again?   Yes.  Actually, today I am on day 4 of another 5 days.  I will fill you in on the Chicago weekend a bit later.

But for now...   Here are the final 10 day results.

I have a long way to go.  For the naysayers and doubters out there.  I am 9 days since day 10 and I am continuing to lose weight.   I haven't gained it all back.  I am not passing out.  I took a weekend off and then today is day 5 of another 5 days.  I will post day 5 results tomorrow.

Let me just say, the gains (or losses in this case) far outweigh the challenges.

Forgiveness - Day #10 - Did You See How Fat She Is? - Part Deux

Forgiveness has a release and a lightness that goes with it.  Holding on to anger, hurt and hatred takes a lot of negative energy.   PLUS, it is not what Jesus wants us to do.

If you have been following my journey, you know some pretty hurtful words were said about me.    A series of events including this one propelled me to make a change and make it BIG.

Another one of those events that I have not shared is when we were in Arizona for a baseball tournament.   It was just our son and me on that trip.  The weather was beautiful.  A couple of younger and much more fit Mom's were going to go hiking.  I chose to say no.  I knew I would hold them back and didn't want to do that.  Others sat by the pool.  I chose to not go to the pool because I was embarrassed of my body.  I was absolutely wallowing in misery and self pity.  Pretty pathetic.   Here I was in all this beauty and I sat in my room and worked, and read, by myself.

Notice that I used the word 'chose'.   I wasn't forced.  I chose to be miserable.   Joy, contentment, happiness?   Those are all choices too.

That trip was a real turning point for me.   Our daughter was still fighting a serious illness so it wasn't time for me to act.   But it was always there.  The desire to change it.

Long story short.   I forgive myself for wallowing in self-pity, for not caring for myself and for letting myself get to the place I was.   I forgive the person that said those words to me.  I will say again, they define her, not me.   I feel a lightness.  No pun intended.  This lightness is in my heart.  Before you say something negative about someone, look in your heart to see why you are saying it?   Are you hurt or angry and need to lash out at someone else?   It really doesn't make you feel better.

Most importantly, if you hear a friend or someone else say something like that about someone else, tell them, "THAT IS NOT OK!!!!!!!"  Trust me, if they are talking like that about someone behind their back, most likely they talk about you behind your back too.   TELL THEM - NO!

I know that was kind of a random thought sequence right there.  Welcome to my brain.

For me, I FORGIVE MYSELF AND I FORGIVE YOU.

This is the last day of this juice only juice cleanse.   I feel great.   I still have a journey ahead of me and the next 4 days present a great challenge to me that I am ready to take on.

I will weigh and measure in the morning before heading to the gym.  Thanks for following along.  Stay if you want.   My journey is not over.

My Heart Is Full - Day #9

There were times in the last 9 days that I wanted to quit.   I wanted to give in.   I just wanted to eat whole food.   Notice, I did not say real food.   Juice is real food.   My family has been amazingly supportive.

My poor family is not really eating much because at first it was hard for me to cook when I wasn't partaking.  I hope they know how much I appreciate their support.   Not eating, the mess in the kitchen, my 'occasional' moodiness on this journey and so much more.

I have been holding on to this little gem since I started.    When I got out my gratitude journal to start this journey I found a letter.   I don't know when it was written, but it came from our lovely daughter.

Here is the text.  Misspellings and all.  I can tell by the writing, the context and the spelling/punctuation that she was quite a bit younger.

To: Mommy I <heart> U

My Mom has made me laugh, made me cry, wiped my tears, hugged me tight, watched me succeed, seen me fail, cheered me on, kept me going strong, and drove me crazy.

But in the end it is all ok and every bad or crazy things that have happened to you, because you guys got in a fight or something, it's worth it.  All it does is bring you to closer together.   You need to be close to your Mom and luckily I am.  She is my best friend, the person who I go and tell everything to.  Sure we may fight but every Mom and daughter do, but I do know that my Mom is the one person who can make me smile from a million miles away.  The best things happen when I am with my Mom, like rolling the windows down in the car and cranking the music up so we can sing like no one is listening, or just laughing together.   Just being with her is a new adventure.  That is what makes my Mom special.  Theese are the memorys that I will remember forever, cherish and love even after she is gone.  As I get older I will only become harder to deal with, I may get an attitude and think my Moms weird and unfair but I will always remember that:

Moms are a promise from God that you will have a friend forever.   But I have to disagree, I didn't get a friend, I got a hero.

I love you and always will Mom

Happy Mothers day.

Did you see how fat she is? - A Look In The Mirror

The other day I looked in the mirror.  It seems like a pretty normal thing to do each day.  Let's face it, you comb your hair, you brush your teeth, usually in front of a mirror.  But do you ever really LOOK in the mirror?  I did.  Then I cried.  I did not recognize the face that looked back at me in the mirror.

This has been the case for a quite a while.  I wrote that paragraph probably 8 months ago.   Fast forward to June 2018.

I have lots of reasons and lots of excuses.  But the biggest thing is as a parent, I have let my care for everyone else take precedence over the care of myself.  The result, I have put on quite a bit of weight.

Recently a friend overheard someone talking about me and about our daughter.   Over the recent years this person has said many hateful and horrible things about our daughter, but this time her self-hatred (more about this later) turned towards me.

The words,

"Did you see how fat she is?"

Those words were spoken about me.  They were spoken about me in anger and in hate.  They were spoken by a person that honestly, I guess it doesn't surprise me.  A series of emotions went through my head.  First, I said I didn't care.  Second, I got worried that my family might be embarrassed by the way I look.   Third,  I was REALLY HURT.  Fourth, I got mad.   Now don't get me wrong, I am not going to give this person credit for opening my eyes.   I have known this for a very long time.  ''

Here is a little history.

Two years ago our daughter got very, VERY sick.  She lost 40-45 pounds, I gained it.  There is nothing worse in the world than watching a child suffer.  I would sit on the floor and watch her sleep on the sofa.  She didn't sleep in her bed because she couldn't make it up the stairs.  When she would get up in the morning, I would have to help her up off the sofa because she couldn't get up.

I quit exercising and I turned to food for comfort.   Our daughter got better after a very long battle and a LOT of medical bills.  That process added more stress to our lives.   All was well, I lost some of the weight and then this winter?  She got sick again.  Same thing all over again.  It wasn't as hard this time because we knew what we were dealing with (sort of -but that is another story).   We had trips to the emergency room because she passed out, a ton of tests and we went through it all again.

The point of this story is not about the hate,  not about the sickness, it is about me.  It is about being worthy.   I am a BELOVED CHILD OF GOD.   My family loves and supports me regardless of where I am physically at.   We are not divorced.   We are not separated.   What and who you are is what matters.  So many Mothers out there do not care for themselves.  Does that make me a failure?   ABSOLUTELY NOT!   I am human.   I am flawed.   I sin.   I am forgiven.   I am WORTHY.

Tomorrow I start a new journey for ME.   It is for me first and then for my family.   I want to feel good.  I want to have energy.   I want to drop pounds.  I want to sleep well again.  I want to fit into my closet full of clothes.   I will do these things on my own.  I am not looking for gimmicks or shakes (full of horrible chemicals).  I will do this the old fashioned way.   Will I have setbacks?   Yes.   But they do not define me or my progress.

Back to the words.   They are just words.  They define her.  They do not define me.   I have prayed about this and I am sad that she has so much self-hatred that she feels the need to say something like that about someone that has only supported her and been kind to her over the years.   She is a bully and yes words hurt.   BUT.  I have the power over what those words mean to me.  They mean NOTHING.

I have been reading and praying and know what my path is for the future.   I will care for myself.   I will eat clean (80% of the time).   I will forgive myself.   I will improve myself daily.  This is my decision after a lot of self reflection since hearing those words spoken about me.  Even though the words came from a horrible place.  I am surrounded by LOVE.  My daughter bought me a My Intent bracelet (more about that later).   The words she chose for me?  I AM WORTHY.

Guess who is joining me on this journey?   My lovely daughter.   When I asked her why she said she wanted to support me.

I will be sharing my journey through this blog and appreciate any and all your comments, support and prayers.  This is not going to be easy.  But I have the love of Christ and my family to get me through it.

Tomorrow I start a juice cleanse.   I don't know how long this will go, but one step at a time.  If my story touches you in any way, I would love for you to share it.   I know there are a lot of Mom's out there like me.

YOU TOO ARE WORTHY.   I AM WORTHY.   HATEFUL WORDS DO NOT DEFINE ME OR YOU!

A Broken Heart - Loss in the Family

It has been a year since you left us.  I still miss you terribly.  I still look for you.

I remember the day we brought you home.  Your sweet little raccoon face.  David dropped me off at the pet adoption and parked the car with Elsie.  When he walked in the door he saw me holding you and knew that it was all over.  He knew you were coming home with us.

We named you Murphy.  Murphy's law followed you everywhere.  You were a little terror when you were younger.  Poor old man Casey.  You terrorized him to no end.  You just wanted to play and Casey just wanted to sleep.

The house seems empty, I look for you all the time.

Towards the end of your life, we had to sometimes carry you outside.  We fed you rice, people food, wet dog food, eggs.  We would look for anything that you would eat.  Sometimes you would go days without eating.  Every day you got weaker my heart broke a little more.  We never wanted you to suffer.  I still saw your heart in those big brown eyes.  You would look at me and follow me around the room with your eyes.

We lathered you with Young Living's Peace and Calming essential oil.  Once you had that on, your breathing would seem easier and you would rest.  Even to this day, I smell you when I smell Peace & Calming.  I know it made your last days easier.

The last couple of days, I would prop your head up on a pillow and lie on the floor next to you.  I would pet your ears.  You loved to have your ears rubbed.  You would bury your head between our legs and snuggle.  That was your snuggle.

The house is no longer full of large clumps of your under coat.  Holy cow you shed ALL THE TIME.  With the Elk Hound undercoat you could pull masses of hair out of you.  In the Spring the birds loved it.  They would come down on the deck to add to their nests while I brushed you.

You marched to your own drum.  Man, you were pig headed.  You would come when you wanted and ignore us when you didn't want to come.  You were the alpha male.  When we would throw the tennis ball, you had no interest in actually getting it.  You just wanted to be sure that Lucy didn't get it.  You would charge at her and she would drop the ball and lay down on her back to let you have it.  She loved you!  She would lick your face and your ears with her tail wagging a hundred miles an hour.

You could NOT be outside when the kids were sledding.  You would run after them, pull their mittens off and playfully nip at their heals.  When Elsie was a toddler I actually hit her in the head with a tennis ball.  She was running up the hill and you were playfully nipping at her heals.  I meant to throw the ball at you (not hard) to get you to stop.  I hit her instead.  I was never a softball player!  You NEVER hurt the kids.  It was just your way of playing.

You often thought you were a lap dog.  You were 55 pounds of a mack truck like dog but you were a lover.  So many times you would jump up on Elsie and try to lay in her lap.  You would scratch her legs but you would curl up in a ball to be on her lap.

You did learn to love Porter again.  When Porter was a toddler, he would lay on you.  He might have occasionally annoyed you a bit.  You kept away from him for a few years.  Although there were times at night, after we had all gone to bed, when Porter would let you up on the sofa.  You weren't supposed to be on that sofa, but he would be up late and you would crawl up there to snuggle with him.  The last 3 or so years you reconnected with him!  He was so excited.

You loved the water.  When we used to go up to our lake home, you would go out in the water and just lie down.  I am sure you were hot with all that fur and it must have felt great.  You would stick your entire head under water chasing something in your imagination.  The smell of wet dog.  Nothing like it and with all your fur?  It took forever to dry.

One place you really despised?  Vets.  It didn't matter how nice they were or what they were doing, you wanted no part of it.  We routinely had to muzzle you when we would go.  I had to do the muzzling, you sure wouldn't let them do that.
When you were younger you had a lump on your side.  I took you to the vet.  It was just simply never a pleasant experience.  They looked at it, looked at you, took some samples and I waited.   I waited, by myself in that room and my mind started to go crazy.  I called David and said, "What if it is cancer?".  I waited some more.  I will never forget the feeling in my stomach when they finally came back after what seemed like an eternity.  It was cancer.  Somehow I knew. The big C word.  A dog is part of our family.  What in the world would we do?  Would you die?

They told me it was one of 3 kinds.  1.  Benign, 2.  Could Re-occur, 3. It Would Kill You.  They had to remove it and do biopsies to find out.

Your memory is an amazing thing.  When I close my eyes I can remember being in that room with you.  I remember the sounds, I remember the smells.  I remember burying my head in your fur and crying with worry.  You comforted me more than I comforted you.

They removed the mass and then came the dreaded CONE period.  Oh my, you hated it, just like every other dog on the planet.  You were big and clumsy.  Running into doors, walls.  And of course, then, more waiting.  This did not kill you.  It was the second type and it never came back.  You were too strong and stubborn to let it come back.

I still look for you.  I still think of you.  You are forever loved.

A Life Of Grace

A couple of Sundays ago,  I was sitting in church, feeling sorry for myself and feeling overwhelmed.  Pastor Susan asked me how I was, and I wanted to say, crappy, horrible, tired, worn out and so many other things.  Instead I gave the traditional, "I'm ok, you?"  My answer probably spoke volumes.  It certainly wasn't very upbeat or positive.  It was indicative of what I was feeling.  But is it right to unload our burdens on people that ask, "How are you?"

I had seen a friend a couple of weeks ago and thought maybe I could unload my burdens on her.  Luckily for her, she didn't give me time to talk about it.  She was unloading her own burdens :)

Here are some questions that I pondered on Sunday.

Why is it so hard to care for ourselves?

Why are people so negative?

Why can't we look for the good in things?

Why don't we trust that God has a plan?

If we focus on our burdens daily, those burdens will bring you down.  I have lived it.  I am living it.

A life filled with grace.  Do you ever see those people?  Can you recognize them?  They are pleasant, positive, upbeat and a joy to be around.  Even in the face of adversity they exude a sense of peace.  Does it mean their life is perfect.  No - probably not.

I want to live a life filled with Grace.

As I watched my parents age and go through end of life, I learned a lot of things.
  1. Time with you parents is precious
  2. They need you
  3. It is our time to give back to them
  4. Learn from their their experiences and attitudes.
One of the things I promised myself is that I wanted to learn to live and age gracefully.  As we get older things start falling apart.  Aches, pains, sometimes illness occur.  How do we handle trials, tribulations, aging, etc. with grace?

What does Grace mean to you.  When I was a kid in my youth group, I learned, "God's Redeeming Actions Contrary to our Earning"  That has stuck with me my whole life.

How we behave, our attitude it is a choice.  I think learning to age gracefully requires us to learn to live gracefully.   Here are some things I think will help me achieve that goal.
  1. Pray Daily
  2. Spend Time In Scripture
  3. Surround Yourself With People That Lift You Up
  4. Lift Up Others
  5. Love
  6. Laugh
  7. Look For The Good In People & Things
  8. See Beauty
  9. Be Thankful Daily
  10. Exercise (Yes David, I said exercise)
  11. Eat Well
  12. Sing
  13. Dance
Decide each morning and each evening what your attitude will be.  Breathe (more on that later) with purpose.  Pray, meditate and make it happen.  Will I succeed every day?  Probably not, but it is a journey to become whole right?  A journey is many steps.  Want to go on that journey with me?

Today, I choose Grace.

Cell Phones - Are You Kidding Me?

True confession:  I have very little tolerance for rude people.

Our society has become increasingly more rude.  There are many areas in our lives where we encounter rudeness.
  • Driving
  • Walking in Malls
  • Parking Lots
  • Weddings
  • Grocery Stores
  • Your Own Car!
I have many examples of these.  Today, though, I want to focus on cell phones or other electronics.  When our children were younger and we would go out for dinner, I admit, I found it easier to have conversation with my husband when the kids had games to play.  Boy do I regret that.  I am now helping them unlearn some bad habits that got significantly worse as they got older.

We have all seen the articles about how we have a generation of people that have their heads in their phones and are missing life.  There are so many things missed.  There was recently a video that was floating around on Facebook about a couple that met and married. The story was they would not have met if they had their heads in their phones!

This isn't the video I was looking for but it makes the point.
I Forgot My Phone

Ok - sorry here is another one.  Cell Phone Impact On Relationships

OH NO!  While I was looking for the original video (which I still cannot find) I came across this "lovely" clip from Rachel Ray.  How to text your ex boyfriend and get him back- Tips and advice
Are you kidding me?  Does this disgust anyone as much as it does me?  I didn't even watch it.

Look at these statistics!  You can click the Source hyperlink for information on more electronic usage.

How many of you went on long road trips with your family?  The car rides seemed horrible right?  Now, looking back, they were amazing.  You saw great things, played games, sang songs and built relationships.

We are raising a generation that will stay connected with far more people than our generation.  But, they also are lacking in communication skills!

I recently had some kids in the car.  One young person actually was on the phone when they got into the car.  There was no greeting at all.  The phone call was finished and they proceeded to start texting non-stop.  It was about a 35 minute car ride.  Almost NOTHING was said.  All you could hear was the annoying click click click of the texting.  My child that was in the car too had sat in the back seat rather than in front like they normally would.  My child conversed with me the entire trip.  NO INTERACTION with the texter.

We arrived at our location and the passenger said, "thanks for the ride".  I didn't answer.

The bright side?  We have a new rule in our car for everyone.  No texting.  End of story.

I'll let you know how it goes when I enforce it with my kids' friends.

I challenge you as families to unplug more often.  Put the phones away, interact, learn how to enjoy each other.

I challenge you to UNPLUG!

Choices - Career - Money - Family - PRIORITIES

All day, everyday we make choices.  I had a job that required quite a bit of travel when the kids were younger.  The demands were terrible, the bosses were worse.  It didn't make any difference what you had going on in your life when you were summoned you said, "how high?".

When my son was younger, here is what the conversations were like.

Day One
 - Hi Mommy how was your day?  (Excited voice)
Day Two
- Hi Mamma how was your day?  (A little deflated)
Day Three
- Hi Mamma when are you coming home?  (Weepy)

Everyday I see posts on people's Facebook pages checking in at airports, travelling here, missing their kid's events, saying things like, "Living the Dream"!  Seriously how can you think this is "Living the Dream"?  I was one of those people.

Let me tell you a secret:  BUSINESS TRAVEL IS NOT GLAMOROUS.

I remember one year at an event my daughter was playing in a championship softball game and I wasn't there.  Another executive summons required me to have lunch with my husband on our anniversary on our way to the airport.  He wasn't coming with me.  My daughter had a significant female moment and I had to get on a plane for a meeting summons.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.  No paycheck is worth all that.  I won't judge you.  Ok, maybe I will.  Family is one of the most important things. Us old folks all know the Cat Steven's song, Cat's In The Cradle.  For you young people...

Cats in the Cradle
Listen Here
by Harry Chapin
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I’m gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I’m gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I don’t know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "That's okay"
And then he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m going to be like him"

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Son, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad,
You know we'll have a good time then.

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day........
I said "I'd like to see you if you don’t mind"
He said "I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Son, I dot know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.

I have lived this song.  As a result I had the opportunity to leave big corporate America and help my husband grow his business.  I MADE THE LEAP OF FAITH.  He owned a trade show exhibit company, Total Displays.
TOTAL DISPLAYS

We made a choice that our family was more important than a paycheck.
Has it been easy?  NO.

We have struggled financially.  Our earnings were cut by more than 50%.  Our expenses were not automatically cut by that.  We had to learn to live together, love together and work together.  We have cut way back on "things" (that is a bonus).  It is sometimes scary.

Was it worth it?  YES

We have been able to be at 90+% of our children's events.  We drive them to school, and pick them up after school.  We learned many valuable lessons about what was important.   We have become closer!

I even started a home based business based on a passion I have for helping people.  It has already helped us financially in less than a year.  Soon that will start being a significant part of our income.

Don't complain about your job, about travelling for work, about missing kids events, IT IS A CHOICE.

An Open Letter To Any Boy That Might Like (in any way) My Daughter

An Open Letter To Any Boy That Might Like (in any way) My Daughter

Dear Young Man (Young being the operative word, you are still very young):

My daughter is one of the MOST PRECIOUS things to me on this earth.  She is competitive, kind, loving, funny, talented, giving, pig headed and yes sometimes annoying.  Aren't we all?  One of the things I have been trying to teach her is how to surround herself with people that truly care for her and are kind to her.  That is a hard lesson for young teenage girls to learn.  Just as we have expectations of our children, we have expectations of their friends.  Sorry - that is just the way it is.

Dating.  I personally believe "dating" at this age (14) is ridiculous.  But I understand it is a right of passage and learning that you all must go through.  I don't have to like it.  What I will tell you is that you will NOT be in a house by yourself with my daughter.  If she is invited to your house, I will call your parents to ask them if I can send anything along with Elsie ;)  Read between the lines, YOUR PARENT(S) MUST BE HOME.  No, in case you ask, older siblings do not count as parents.

Respect.  This is a word that is very difficult for young people to understand.  Respect means so many things.  I wish I could just say, "Treat my daughter with respect" and you would understand but I am sure you will not.  So I will make you a list.  Please keep in mind that this list may change over time.  Don't worry, I'll update it here for you so that you can refer back to it.
  • Kindness - be kind to her, use nice words, don't talk about her behind her back, don't talk with her friends about her, - oh my this could go on for ever
  • Honesty - pretty simple really - DON'T LIE
  • Trustworthy - if you say you are going to do something, do it
  • Pictures - ok this might be embarrassing to you - don't ever ask her to send you an inappropriate picture. If you do, I will hunt you down!
  • Social Media - let me just say, I follow my daughter on all social media sites.  I will request to follow you.  If you do not allow me to follow you, I will wonder what you are hiding.  It comes with the territory of being a Mother.  Get over it.
  • Pictures2 - If you do decline me, be aware, I have her passwords and I OWN HER PHONE, COMPUTER ETC.  I do look and if you post anything inappropriate, see the first Pictures post for the consequence.
  • Talk - texting seems to be a necessary evil for this generation.  Talking is important.  You can't have any kind of relationship, friendship or other without talking.
  • Listen - girls that are 14 seem to have a lot of issues.  Sometimes you just need to listen.
  • Supportive - Support her activities.  You will win huge brownie points with all of us in her family (especially her) if you show up to watch a softball game or a concert!
  • Nasty - I know how boys minds work.  I get it.  But don't text nasty things about my daughter to your buddies or to her friends.  She won't like it and I can guarantee you I won't like it either.  You don't want to know what her Dad will do if he finds out!
  • Parents - this is really my rule.  I really am not that scary (Dad may be but I am not).  Be polite to me (and her Dad), talk to me, say please and thank you especially if you are at my house.  Oh and I am Mrs. Hanken to you unless I give you permission otherwise.
  • Little Brother -Our daughter has a brother that is 2.5 years younger than her.  He means the world to her.  If you treat him badly it will not go well for you.
  • Family - This is one of the most important thing in our house.  If you talk smack about anyone in her family (See Little Brother) you are not respecting her.
  • Apologize - We are all human.  We all make mistakes.  You will make mistakes.  If you are wrong (and even sometimes if you are not) apologize.  It will take you far in life.
  • Physical - If you EVER HIT HER, you are done.  We have ZERO TOLERANCE for this type of behavior.  It shouldn't have to be said, but I know many people who have suffered abuse.  If you do we will file charges if we are able.
If our daughter likes you, we want to like you.  Please make it easy for us.
